Port Angeles is on the brink of some real economic improvement. Westport, a yacht building company that produces boats in the $12 to $30 million range, has announced that it will be opening a facility in Port Angeles. It will break ground early in 2003 and be operational early 2004 if not late 2003. It looks like this will mean 150 to 200 jobs.
In the last two years, the community has come together around something called Clallam NetWorks. This collaboration among different groups in the community is having an impact on the economic development. Focusing interests in different clusters (such as the Timber Cluster, AgriBusiness Cluster, Technology Cluster, Marine Services Cluster, etc), the community is discovering new ways of working together to encourage meaningful economic growth.
A new performing arts center, Cascadia, is in the planning stages. That group is looking toward an auditorium, rehearsal space, and shops as part of the center.
A Convention Center is looking like a probability as the last few permitting hurdles are being cleared. On the waterfront, this center is planned to allow for larger conventions in Port Angeles.
Taken together, all of these efforts weave together to produce a new energy and vitality that hasn?t been enjoyed here in some time.
